Does This Taste Funny?
Evie & Stephen Colbert at the Flagship
We were overjoyed to host Evie McGee Colbert and Stephen Colbert at our Flagship Store in Charleston to celebrate the launch of their new cookbook, Does This Taste Funny? As the happy couple (of 31 years!) are native Charlestonian’s, they had an intimate party for their family and creative partners who contributed to the book. Juliska was lucky enough to be one of those contributors and to host this wonderful soirée on an early autumn evening to celebrate their home-baked love of the Lowcountry with us—and plenty of laughs.
“Recipes our Family Loves”
Brimming with delicious recipes, charming family anecdotes and beautiful photography, Does This Taste Funny? is the result of a year of working (Stephen was doing The Late Show!) and cooking from home during the pandemic:
“We were all stuck together and couldn’t go out, so we cooked. We had all three kids back under one roof for the first time in a long time, and we had dinner each night as a family. Cooking together became a major source of entertainment.”
“Party food is happy food...” - Evie Colbert
For the event, we were thrilled to bring some of the delicious recipes from the book to life and pass them on platters for guests to enjoy, from Cheese Biscuits inspired by Evie’s mother (the book is dedicated to her, a “real Southern Hostess”) to Bacon-Wrapped Dates Stuffed with Marcona Almonds and Crunchy Cornflake Chicken with Mango-Cilantro Sauce.
“I love cocktail hour. It feels like a reward for having gone so long without a cocktail.” - Stephen Colbert
Guests mingled in the best of spirits as cocktails from the book were shaken, stirred and served from our gleaming Bohemian Bar, with fresh herbs from the Basil Mint Martinis smelling divine and the bright hue of the Les Pieds dans L’eau libation lending a gorgeous pop of pink to the sparkling soirée. Inspired by a Colbert family trip to Provence, the name of this delicious watermelon cooler means “feet in the water,” a French expression that’s roughly equivalent to “let your hair down,” which we found entirely fitting for this fabulous evening. Evie and Stephen themselves were effervescently funny and down to earth. They are an authentic pleasure to be around, and you can see they are wonderful life partners for one another.
Legendary Toasts
With an uncanny shared experience of also authoring a book as a husband-and-wife team during the lockdown, we absolutely adored getting to spend time with Evie and Stephen and discovering the many other things we have in common, namely: a love of friends, family, food, lots of laughter, and the Lowcountry. Cheers to the Colbert’s!
